American Idol Season 10 - My Top 9

The focus is back on singing and not a ~~moment~~ season too soon! I have been keeping on Idol this season solely through the magic of the internets which has an interesting benefit of keeping a lot of the judge's opinions out of my head.

So, based only on my impressions of their singing performances, I present my Top 9 for this season (short commentary on each below):

I will title this season as the Season of Individuals... there are truly some unique and distinct voices and I am so glad that America gets to hear them.

SCOTTY MCCREERY - A favorite for me since he opened his mouth at his first audition. Not only does Idol need a male country winner to round out it's stable of champions but I personally like that he is representing those of us that don't sing tenor!

LAUREN ALAINA - Another favorite of mine from the get-go, she's a little bit Kelly and a little bit Carrie... she's one of the only youngins that I worry about nerves. She also has a little backlash going because she has been so heavily praised up to this point.

STEFANO LANGONE - He's undeniably happy and cute but he didn't win me over until his Wild Card performance of "I Need You Now". Now I know he has depth and he knows he has another fan.

THIA MEGIA - Another one that I wasn't convinced of... sure she's got the voice but little girls who try to hard to sing like women (i.e. Charice) always bug me. But I've realized that she isn't trying to sing like an adult, it's that way naturally. She's poised, confident and I would be scared of her if I was a girl in Top 13.

PAUL MCDONALD - I don't think America is ready to crown someone like Paul as The American Idol but I am so glad he made it this far! Pllllleeeeease give him a chance to sing some Ray LaMontagne!

ASHTON JONES - I need a black diva in my life (and in this competition) but let's hope she can break the curse and make it farther than the other greats like J.Hud, Trenyce, etc.

CASEY ABRAMS - Another super unique singer that I doubt America is ready to see go all the way. He's one of those that surprises me with his song choice and arrangements. I can't wait to see what he does next!

JACOB LUSK - OK, maybe I need TWO black divas in my life. His control and range are INSANE.

PIA TOSCANO - First it's fun to say her name. Second she is crazy good. If she can make an up-tempo song sound as good as a ballad she may be unstoppable.

Some people may know her from the group GIRLS ALOUD or as the sweet (but very competent IMO) judge from the UK show THE X FACTOR but few know her as a solo artist.

Fitting in somewhere between KYLIE MINOGUE and BRITNEY SPEARS, Cheryl is a bonafide popstar... but she has yet to breakout or even be tried out here in the States.

Her first album was heavily produced by WILL.I.AM and created some tasty pop jems including "Fight For This Love", which has lodged itself firmly into my Top 10 songs of all time. Also listen and watch the hypnotizing video for "3 Words".

There is speculation that SIMON COWELL could be bringing her over to be a judge on the US version of X-Factor... could that be her big break?

It's no secret that I love female rappers.

...and NICKI MINAJ is filling that special place in my heart in a special 2-for-1 kind of way: she is a fantastic combination of MISSY ELLIOTT (where have you been!?!?) and LIL' KIM.

Semi-insane lyrics meet a tough girl/foul-mouthed sex pot. Count me in.

Besides guesting on almost every single hip-hop song over the last year she is now readying her first solo album Pink Friday. The first single from the album "Your Love" samples Annie Lennox and provides a surprising change in style for Nicki; she wants us to know that she isn't JUST a rapper she can sing (a little) and actually produce a sweet track with real emotion embedded in it.

The supposed follow-up track is "Right Thru Me" which continues the idea that her style of music will be hard and sweet.

I fully expect other tracks on the album to be more of the former but it's nice to know she isn't expecting one side of that coin to sell all her albums.

1. LOCNVILLE (pronounced LOCK-IN-VILLE)

These twin brothers are blowing up in South Africa and are starting to move internationally. They've got the looks and a truly unique sound. At first listen I didn't get it but the songs stuck in my head and I found myself going back for more. I really enjoy their off-beat phrasing and all the extra little bleeps and bops in the background.

Last night I had the great pleasure of attending ArjanWrites' night of "crunch pop music" called "SUPERFRAICE" featuring four up-and-coming artists.

SIDE NOTE:: If you are a music fan and don't already follow his blog, YOU SHOULD!

So the line-up included Scott Simons, Love Grenades, Reni Lane and V.V. Brown. Hands down the standout of the night was V.V. Brown who's 50's-retro, new-wave pop got everyone jumping, clapping and singing along. She is infectious, a wonderful performer and came off as geniunely sweet. Oh, and she's a NUTSO talented singer.

You all know that I am a sucker for a male singer-songwriter so Scott Simons was right up my alley. I could easily imagine some of his songs playing on Grey's Anatomy, The Hills, Brothers & Sisters... for those emotionally charged scenes. Love Grenades were also very fun with a sound that made me think of No Doubt meets La Roux while Reni Lane seemed to be trying too hard to be quirky.

But again, if you're looking for a new star in 2010, get ready for V.V. Brown. On some other blog they described her as Beyonce meets Amy Winehouse... I don't think that does her justice.

There are so many odd things about this performance... the lead singers circus outfit and thin mustache, the rapping priest, the thick hip-hop dancing girls, the Chicago-esque sillohette dancers, the awkward slow dance... which all make the lyrics seem completely normal ("get a job done in the parking lot, in the backseat, in the backseat of your car").

And yet, I'm hooked. Sign me up Staygold.

Rob Thomas - "Fire On The Mountain"

In my opinion, Rob Thomas is one of the best song writers out there and for me, his voice is one of the sexiest. Saw his solo concert this year and he sounds even better live than recorded. This is the frontman for Matchbox Twenty (in case you didn't know). When he growls "how do you sleep when the city is burning" I get chills. My stereo can't play this song loud enough.

Imogen Heap - "First Train Home"

I read a lot of music blogs and some feature music videos, which is where I first heard/saw this song. It's a weird little video that kept me listening, and thank god I did! I think I read somewhere that this song is really sad and about breaking up but I just know that it's hypnotic and beautifully repetitive in all the ways I love.

I just can't say enough good things about this song. It very well be my favorite song of the year and the video hits all the right emotional notes too. Matt's voice reminds me a little of Rufus Wainwright and the fact that he is an out musician is inspiring to me.

Jem - "Yellow"
I'm always intrigued by covers and this one did it right. By stripping down the original song you focus instead on Jem's gentle voice and simply float away. This song was released around Valentine's Day on a Starbucks only album called Sweetheart.

Erik Hassle - "Hurtful"
Ignore the big red hair and generally weird facial features. In fact, just close your eyes and LISTEN. This kid has such a unique and interesting voice. After letting myself begin to fall in love earlier this year (and then get shut down) I simply changed the lyrics from "I" to "you" and this song became my comfort food.

Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted [Full Album]
For me, this is her best album. I think she perfectly blended the pop sensibilities of Breakaway with the rock edge of My December. I could write something about almost every song but I want to highlight a lesser-known bonus track that I believe only made it onto the Japanese version of the album. The track is called "Can We Go Back" and the song allows Kelly to let loose and WAIL begging to be able to turn back the clock on a relationship that has gone sour.

I was skeptical and quite honestly a little annoyed that the Pussycat Dolls covered the Slumdog Millionaire song "Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny)" but damn if the song isn't catchy! Nicole Scherzinger sounds great recorded (not so much live) and really, is there any point in the rest of the girls anymore? I guess that is why the single is labeled as Nicole Scherzinger featuring the Pussycat Dolls.

If I were those other girls, I'd start preparing myself for Charm School.

A few quick updates about my personal life and then back to the music:
*Internship - A lot of you have been asking what is going on with my work situation and in a nut shell, I am Anne Hathaway in Devil Wears Prada minus the couture fashion. I am interning at an independent TV development and production company in Santa Monica. I'm there 5 days a week answering phones (there's more to it than you'd think) and watching YouTube. I realize the second part doesn't seem so bad, but believe me, scouring the internet for the next big TV show idea does get monotonous after awhile. Anyhow, I'm serious when I say my boss is like Meryl Streep's character: demanding and sometimes belittling. But I am getting great experience to next be an assistant to a record producer or agent. And believe me, I am going to kick ass when that happens.

*Basketball - Settling in to the new scene here. Figuring out all the varied personalities and cliques. Not sure where I fit in but have met some great guys. I am feeling great about my game lately and I know that I am going to be ready for the Chicago tournament next month.

*HRC Gala - It's tonight. More details (and hopefully some celebrity pictures) to come.

KELLY CLARKSON!
Kelly promised an album with a diverse track listing and she delivers. Depending on your mood and state of mind, you can find something on this album that delivers.

Her new album All I Ever Wanted is out and I'm confused by people who think that this is her going back to her Breakaway-roots. While I do agree that the material is less dark sounding than her last album, I think the ROCK edge is even more prevalent throughout this set and to me her albums seem like a natural (and fantastic) evolution of sound.

I'm not going to talk about "My Life Would Suck Without You" because you all know about it and if you don't you're living under a rock.

Here are my favorite tracks (in no particular order):

"I Do Not Hook Up" - I hope you're all ready to hear this played CONSTANTLY on the radio and on repeat in your head. I think her management company is going to play it smart and release this as a well-timed, 3rd single to land nicely in heavy summer rotation. Mark my words. H-I-T. Oh yeah, it was originally written for Katy Perry... thank god that never happened.

"Ready" - A breezy melody and simple lyric ("I'm ready now, come get me.") are sometimes all you need. This one makes me smile.

"Whyyawannabringmedown" - I would have NEVER expected a song like this from a Kelly Clarkson album but I kinda love it. Punk rock at break-neck speed. It will probably never be a radio single but as they say on Idol, sometimes you have to take a risk...

"Cry" - My guess for a second single to break-up the up-tempo rock songs. Very heartfelt and potential for a gorgeous music video. Killer lyic too: "If anyone asks, I'll tell them we just fell apart."

Hurtful = Pleasurable

Everytime I listen to a new song I like to pretend I am a record exec listening to prospective artists and try to make a determination within the first 15 seconds or so. I can generally tell if I'm going to like a song within that timeframe...

Erik Hassle's "Hurtful" [buy it on iTunes] had me hooked from the start. Kickin' the Peanuts calls it a "dreamy electro-pop ballad" and I just call it "infectious."

The video is interesting too and plays around with black and white vs. color (something I have been doing a lot with my new Canon camera).

Over the last few years, TV has been doing a great job finding new and interesting music to feature within their shows to the point that some watch the shows primarily for the music! Many people point to The O.C. as popularizing this trend however I would say that Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV show, not the movie) did it first and did it better.

But I digress...

The song/video below is something I could easily see (or in this case, hear) on one of my favorite shows right now Brothers & Sisters, a show that I believe also does a great job of utilizing music within the storytelling (ex. Sara Bareilles - "City").

Hello internet friends! I am back and better than ever!

I decided to make my move by quitting Target and moving to Los Angeles. I'm here to make my mark and maneuver my way into my dream job working in the music business. As they say in RENT "times are shitty, but I'm pretty sure they can't get worse" and that's exactly how I feel; although the economy is down, I'm not and I am ready to start making it happen!

So let's get to MUSIC:

If you've never been to L.A. there is a place in downtown Santa Monica called The 3rd Street Promenade. Along with various stores, there are street performers about every 1/2 block or so. There are mostly singers and the other day while I was there with a friend, I spent some time listening to a few of them.

There was the cute-as-button (I've never understood where that expression came from) but overly coached/rehearsed wannabe future American Idol pre-teen who powered her way through Mariah, Celine, etc.

But there were also two artists that stuck out (enough so for me to purchase their music):

Ken Oak Band [http://www.kenoakband.com] - I love music that has a depressed/melancholy feeling about it and this duo definitely strikes the right chords. One of them plays cello while the other plays acoustic guitar. Together they make perfect music to listen to while relaxing with a glass of wine.

Chelsea Williams [http://www.chelseawilliams.com] - If I had to pick a favorite music genre/style it would have to be Singer-Songwriter. Her voice sounds just as good live as it does recorded. She has clever lyrics but more importantly great melodies.

I woke up this morning after an extremely vivid dream. You know the kind of dream that seems so real and when you wake up you can still feel, smell, taste or hear parts of it? In this dream, I was pregnant. Not in a funny, Arnold Schwarzenegger/Junior way but rather it was totally normal and acceptable for a man to be pregnant, and I was. I felt the baby kick and everything.

When I woke up, I remembered that today is my birthday and then I put the pieces together. My biological clock must officially be ticking. That or it was some weird metaphor for being born but then I would be birthing myself??? Nah, I'm going with biological clock.

So that's weird, huh? I mean, I've always loved kids and everyone knows I'm going to have some one day so it's not weird that I dream about having kids but it's weird that I dreamed about being pregnant on the same day it's my birthday, right?

Birthday/up-coming plans:

Oct 23-27 - Washington D.C. for basketball tournament
Oct 27-Nov 1 - NYC for bday fun and information gathering at NYU Steinhardt
Nov 1-Nov 4 - Disneyland for Mom's 60th birthday

I'm so excited for this vacation and also to see NYU which will help me make a decision that will change my life: will I attend in the Fall and pursue a Master's Degree in Music Business?

I haven't spent much time analyzing why I enjoy this so much (maybe you all can help me figure it out) but I love it when things fit into other things. Like when you are moving into a new apartment and furniture or decorations fit perfectly into the nooks and crannies. What's a cranny, anyway?

Or like today when I had three cardboard boxes from a few different shopping trips and they all fit into each other perfectly!

Does this tie into my need for balance stemming from being a Libra? I don't get angry if things don't fit, but it gives me a little burst of joy when it does.

Many of those players also play in the bi-yearly league I play in and travel to the same tournaments I attend. Building on the thesis that I over-think love...

I have long thought that by living in San Francisco - which many consider the "Gay Mecca" - that I have spoiled myself. By that, I mean that due to the overwhelming number of out gay men, anywhere else I live after this will have many less "options" and that I am hurting my chances of finding love.

However, recently I have revisited this idea and come to the realization that I have lived here for almost 8 years and although those years have produced AMAZING friends, a new passion in basketball and an immeasurably increased self-awareness, what did I get in the relationship/love department? One three year relationship. That isn't to say it wasn't good and I wouldn't want additional superfluous relationships but I can't even say that beyond that I have had other short-term relationships.

I guess the point is that for a long time I have been afraid to move out of San Francisco. Afraid that leaving here meant that it would be very difficult to find someone to date. But I understand now that it isn't a game of odds (or a game at all for that matter)... Leaving the confines of SF means meeting a different kind of guy. And truthfully, that sounds refreshing.

I'm not knocking this city. Believe me, I couldn't have become who I am now without living here. But I'm ready to give myself the opportunity to change, grow and learn in a new environment.

Oh, and last night I grabbed David Hernandez' pec.

Each time I get out of the city, the distance seems to bring an all too familiar clarity about what I am looking for... namely, a house and a family.

This weekend I am spending time visiting my sister in the Central Valley and today was so refreshing:

-playing baseball in the backyard with my two little nephews
-riding bikes with the kids around the neighborhood (and not worrying about them being out-of-site for a few minutes)
-enjoying the quiet and stillness that you just can't get in a big city
-lighting sparklers and watching fireworks from the driveway
-the weather actually being above 65 degrees

The Heart Of The Matter

I've always wanted to hear someone say "you're the ONE" and be so certain about it. Last night I did and although it occurred while under the influence (me, not him) and in a loud bar, it's still sticking with me... enough so to write about it the next morning.

The guy, "M", has been in-and-out of my life for almost 5 years. For most of that time, the barrier was that one or both of us was in a relationship. It was almost comical had it not also been a little painful. A few times, I was invited to dinners (with a sense of urgency) after a build-up of flirtatious text messages and each time disappointed by the announcement being that he was in a relationship. I learned not to trust or allow myself to think that something could happen between the two of us.

Which brings me back to last night. Following a viewing of Sex & The City with some of my closest friends we are out on the town feeling both introspective and hopeful for love. M happens to come into the same bar I am in and we start talking. Actually, Frannie facilitated a mini couples counseling where the idea is floated that M is my Mr. Big. There were some breakthroughs with M admitting that he handled a lot of our previous interactions poorly but he also (rightfully so) called me out on being somewhat ambivalent and unclear about my feelings.

At that point I said something out loud that I have been thinking for a long time.

"I'm worried that I still feel damaged from my last relationship even though it ended almost 3 years ago."

Then M said

"I don't think you have found someone who you can fully trust and confide in and you might not completely get over him until you do."

If you know me at all, you know that I THINK a lot more than I should about how I FEEL rather than just... feeling:

Do I just want to hear SOMEONE say these romantic things to me or do I believe him?
Does it mean something that we are still connected to each other after all these years?
How significant is a 10 year difference in age?
Is the final step in "getting over" or "moving on" from a previous relationship "getting in" to a new one?

I rarely request comments but I honestly am looking for some advice/perspective.

It seems to take a bad day to snap me back into a positive mood. Sort of seems backwards I guess, but after feeling so out of it for most of Tuesday and Wednesday I met up with Frannie, Bathhouse, LingLing, McFierce, O.P. and Jason for a photoshoot. I can't talk much more about it as it is part of a going-away present/project. But in a few weeks when said going-away occurs I will be sure to post the shots. Let's just say, they are FEEEEE-IERCE!

The point is that being with this group of guys immediately puts me back on track. I realize that these friendships, these people, are what are really important in life and the other trivial frustrations and setbacks are merely obstacles keeping me from them.

I came home exhausted last night, but in a great way. I had a fulfilling day that ended with the company of great friends. Today flew by at work and for some reason "Being Alive" from the musical 'Company' popped into my head. I've posted a video of Raul Esparza (a potential future husband) performing the song at the Tony Awards. His voice is so powerful but the lyrics are what resonate so listen closely...

Funny Blondes

Yesterday I went downtown to see "Baby Mamma" with Frannie, LingLing, McFierce, Honeyballs, Beeker and those without nicknames (yet): Brien & Scott. It was the funniest movie I have seen in years mostly because it was a great combination of slap-stick/low-brow humor and witty dialogue. Amy Poehler is probably the funniest actress out there right now and Tina Fey writes about hilarious situations in a truly relatable way. There were many great cameos from some SNL vets but the two that stood out were Sigourney Weaver and Steve Martin. If you haven't seen it yet (and I'm sure that's many of you since it just came out Friday) I would definitely recommend it.

The other funny blonde out there today is Anna Farris and the thought just popped into my head that if I could see a movie with Anna and Amy.... I can't think about that, it's just too much to handle! But take a look at the trailer below for "House Bunny" which also stars Katharine McPhee (American Idol Season 6).

I can't even remember the last time I actually wrote about something going on in my life here, but that isn't to say that things haven't been happening. On the contrary, things have been pretty busy. I wish I could say "eventful" but that is on the horizon. A change IS gonna come...

However, I simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to post a quick message about last night. Annie and I decided to go on a shopping spree to the Gilroy Outlets (read: 2 hours from San Francisco) and arrived exactly 1 hour before the stores all closed. What are two city girls to do?

If you said "sprint from store-to-store (here-to-there for you Alexyss Tylor fans) and buy anything on first instincts alone, spending 7-10 minutes or less in each store".... you would be correct. It was like bi-racial couple night on Super Market Sweep.

Post-shopping we had back into the city and met up with Frannie, LingLing, Stu, Jeffrica and
McFierce at Truck. My ultimate basketball crush was a barback (note to self, frequent Truck on Friday nights more often) and although we were all having a great time hanging out together, the evening was quickly coming to a close. Shopping is hard ya'll!

RENT stars Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp will reprise their original Broadway (and film) roles in a 2009 national tour of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Jonathan Larson musical, which will launch in January.

Pascal and Rapp originated the roles of Roger Davis and Mark Cohen at the New York Theatre Workshop, on Broadway, and in London, and re-created their roles in the 2005 movie version of the musical. Pascal and Rapp returned to Rent on Broadway for a limited engagement in the summer of 2007.

The Broadway musical ends its 11-year run June 1 at the Nederlander Theatre. Seller stated, "Adam and Anthony didn't just play Roger and Mark. To millions of Rent fans they are Roger and Mark. Adam and Anthony are to Rent what Joel Grey was to Cabaret and Zero Mostel was to Fiddler on the Roof.

This is what we are faced with if John McCain wins the general election in November. If you don't believe it, open your eyes. Whether Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination, they will need to be ready for battle and I hope that everyone can put aside their pride if "their candidate" doesn't win and rally behind the nominee.

The Presidential Election has become my recent obsession. I literally watch the votes come in for each and every primary and caucus (ha ha, caucus) and refresh the CNN website to see political analyst's commentary on the results. And while most of you know that I am a supporter of Hillary Clinton, I want to make it clear that I am not therefore, AGAINST Barack Obama.

I am the kind of person who tries to solve problems in my life in a logical manner. And if this election and choice of Democratic candidate can be considered a logic problem then I need to support someone who backs up their ideas with specific plans of action for the future. I understand that politicians are never able to execute every single plan they campaigned on during their subsequent term of office (and maybe that is Obama's strategy: no specifics, no let downs) but if someone (in this case Hillary) has put in the time and energy to plan out HOW to make change a reality then my mind can get behind that.

Don't forget that although the media has been spinning Obama's recent wins (10 in-a-row as of 2/19/08) as decisive momentum, what has this actually gained him? Basically he has needed 10 states to just get him back even with Hillary. Half of the people who vote for Democrats still support Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama's wins are impressive but they didn't hand him the nomination.

Lastly, I am just a little worried that many first-time (or sporadic) and un-educated voters are getting caught up in Obama's speeches. When do I get to hear HOW he plans to turn the middle class housing foreclosure state around? Take a look at the clip below and let's get some discussion going.

As the nail biter of a presidential race becomes more uncertain, the only thing guaranteed is a good cry on Inauguration Day. Electing our first woman or black president will bring sobs of joy, just as the election of a Republican will usher in wallowing wails of woe.

However, there is one more issue that is worthy of tears, and that is how few Americans could imagine a gay President of the United States. At the age of 37, if I proclaimed that one day I would run for president, people would offer patronizing or quizzical looks, before they suggested a random drug test. They would say, "We won't see a gay president in your lifetime."

I had to make room for my Big Brother 9 Fantasy Team (I chose purely based on looks... how else can you judge someone?) so it was time to bring down the Presidential Election Poll (but it will be back soon in a new iteration). Here are the results:

Let's not expect that it will "all turn out OK" and not vote. Go out today and make your voice heard. I think there are two great Democratic candidates for you to choose from and in the end I will be happy to support either one to the finish line.

For now though, I am rooting for Hillary Clinton to become the FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT!

How Do You Measure 12 Years?

I guess it's true what they say, "nothing lasts forever"... RENT is closing on Broadway after 12 years! Many people have said that they feel the show had lost it's relevancy in some ways and that it no longer carried as much of a spark because they idea of a pop-rock musical isn't new.

But if you know me at all, you know how much this show means to me and how relevant I think the messages are. The show is about holding on to hope, living life in the present and most of all, LOVE.

As for relevancy, sure it doesn't speak exactly to the times of today (i.e. AZT), but isn't art supposed to capture the feelings of a moment in time? Should a painting of a place that no longer exists be taken down from a museum? Should a novel about an ancient civilization be thrown out of a library? No, I'd prefer that RENT be recognized for capturing the emotion and its' ability to transport us, mind and heart, back to that time. I don't see anyone questioning the need for Les Miserables or The Color Purple...

Regardless, I'd like to pay my respects to a show that has truly impacted my life.

I cemented my friendship with my best friend because of this show.
It was the soundtrack for my college search.
My first and only tattoo is connected to this show.
My final research paper in college centered on Jonathan Larson and the show.
I have seen the show more times than any other and taking many of my friends to see it for their first (but not last) time.
I still cry when I watch or listen to it all the way through.

For me at least! It's AMERICAN IDOL time! This Tuesday and Wednesday, the pop-culture juggernaut returns for it's 7th Season. All the judges are back and the producers have promised more attention on the contestants, rather than celebrity "mentors" (no offense, but Gwen Stefani was pointless). I think that a strength of the the other FOX reality show 'So You Think You Can Dance' has been the decision to focus on the contestants back-stories and really let us feel like we know and care about them. And there have been rumors of a tour joining the two shows together...

Anyhow, my good friend Jesse and I have a long-running blog dedicated solely to Idol (not just American Idol but also other Idol spin-offs from around the globe). So I thought I would interject some cross-blog advertising and plug All Things Idol. Head on over and keep up with the show with episode recaps, behind-the-scenes gossip (when we can find it) and a continuation of a feature I started last year where I compare current contestants to their look-a-likes (it's not always a pretty picture).

Change vs. Experience

I had a great discussion last night with some of my friends about Hillary vs. Obama. While I am not 100% sure, I am very close to pledging my support to Hillary. I do believe that we need change in America and I think that for once, the Democratic Party has delivered a unified message/goal for us to get behind. In fact, the message is so strong, clear and poignant that the Republican Party knew enough to adopt it as well.

Change is defined as "to make or become different in some particular way, without permanently losing one's or its former characteristics or essence". Barack Obama has a new vision for this country; some radical ideas that he would like to implement into our government and hopes on creating renewed trust and hope in our politicians. My question is HOW? Over the next few months, I would like to hear about HOW he will accomplish this, specifically.

For now, I think Hillary made a great point when she said:

"I don't think there is a contradiction between change and experience, I think they have to go hand-in-hand."

New Hampshire Debates + YouTube

Did everyone out there watch The New Hampshire Debates on Saturday? I did and I am really getting excited about this election.

On a side note, did you notice that facebook was one of the sponsors of the debate? Very interesting.

But the reason I am posting tonight is that I am wondering what sort of effect YouTube is going to have on the American public as they go into decision mode about their Presidential vote. The internet has made information more and more readily available and YouTube is letting people see and hear the Presidential candidates in a new way. Will the fragmented videos create a distorted or varied perspective (or both)?

I guess what I can see happening is what happens so often when journalists take quotes; we get sound bites that can be twisted. Since most Americans attention span is shortening, will they choose to skip watching entire debates and instead get their information from YouTube clips? Therefore are they just getting a "video bite" that may or may not truly represent the meaning behind what was said?

Below is a video that I hope (for Hillary's sake) goes viral and could be an example of what I mentioned above. It shows a wonderfully human side of her that many people feel is lacking. I personally think that the flack she is getting is a double-standard.

Looking back on the year of 2007 I thought a good place to begin would be my resolution post:

1. Forgive him
2. Spend less time on the internet
3. Take a trip outside of the United Stateswith a few days traveling alone
4. See my family more often
5. Begin researching Grad School
6. Volunteer once-a-month
7. Fall in love (I can hope, right?!)

43%? That's not very good. I'm probably spending more time on the internet, I didn't travel alone, seeing family more often is a work-in-progress (as is volunteering) and I guess I can't really control #7. But there were things I did that also weren't on the list. The one that comes to mind is getting more fit. I go to the gym 2-4 times a week consistently and play basketball twice a week and I'm proud of how I look now.

So for 2008, I am going with some new resolutions:

1. Find a new, warmer, brighter apartment
2. Snow trip and beach trip
3. Get a job with Apple
4. Decide on Grad School
5. Appreciate my friends more
6. Get and stay (credit)debt-free

I also decided to look up my horoscope for 2008 and see what the coming year may have in store for me:
